On The Late Freight To Hogwarts

I didn't read the Harry Potter series until late 2008.

Can you believe that?

I always said, "Uh, I don't like MAGIC. I don't like FANTASY. I don't want to read a book about WIZARDS."

So I didn't.

Even though my dad loved the books. Even though my brother loved them. Even though plenty of people I knew were loving the heck out of them, I was just convinced that they weren't for me.

It wasn't until two years ago, when everyone on my online book club peer pressured me into it that I finally gave in and read the series.

Of course I devoured them all within a week, and I was irritated with myself for taking so long to read such an amazing series. Of course, I fell in love with the wizarding world, and now I'm (slowly) going through the books again on audio and really enjoying Jim Dale's narration. Oh, and I'm making my way through the movies.

That's right, the first part of Deathly Hallows comes out on Friday and I haven't even seen all of the movies yet! I finally watched the 5th movie this past weekend, but I really need to catch up so I can see DH in the theater. I wanted to go to the midnight showing, but I have no one to go with me, so I'll settle for an ASAP showing...but I need to get movie 6 in there somehow. I have it on DVR, I just need the time to watch it.

Did anyone else out there lag so much on reading Harry Potter? Or am I the only loser? And would you guys kill me if I did a Harry Potter post every day this week to pump us up for the movie? I know everyone else is doing it, but I'm excited!

  1. I didn't start reading Harry Potter until 2006 when my college boyfriend (who was OBSESSED with the books and movies) made me read them. I read the first four, and I loved them, but then I started student teaching and kept telling myself "I'll finish the series later when I'm not so busy!" Well...here it is, 2010, almost 2011, and I haven't finished the series. Oops!

I think I'll go back and read from the beginning and watch all the movies soon, but it won't happen before the new movie comes out.

I'd love to see some Harry Potter-themed posts this week anyway!

  2. I think I started them back in 2002 or so, and I've been in love with them ever since. Aren't you glad we pressured you into it? If we hadn't you wouldn't have fallen in love with those darned Weasley boys. ;)

  3. Well you know I started reading them about the same time you did and those are part of what brought me to the board.

I made a deal with a friend of mine to finally read the series because I had felt the exact same way you did. Now I'm an HP uber freak and I wish I hadn't waited so long to read them.

I like the HP posts this week. I actually have a vlog planned for tomorrow because I want to show off my HP b-day present to myself..lol

You should do one too :-) HP VLOG FTW!

  4. I didn't start the series until late 2008 and I kick myself every day for being so stubborn about reading it. So believe it or not, you weren't the last person on earth to read it!

And you SO need to finish up the movies. If you like the raging teenage hormones in the HBP book, you'll love them in the movie.

  5. I don't remember when I started reading them. It had to have been before the first one came out in theaters, because I saw the first four movies during their opening weekends. I still haven't seen the sixth movie, nor have I read the final book. I really need to do both soon!

I still remember hearing about the books back in the beginning from 2 of my friends. Both of them said, "It's a kid's book, but adults like it too."

  6. I was SO lame about it...I loved wizards and fantasy books growing up, but I didn't want to read HP because they were *too* popular, and I was SO PUNK ROCK in high school, and reading books that are *popular* would have been *lame.* But then one night a bunch of my friends went to see CoS in theaters, and I wanted to go with them, but that's what they were seeing and I couldn't convince them otherwise, so I went. And I loved it. At the time I was working this horribly boring job in retail, and we had a copy of CoS in the store, so I read it when we were slow. In one shift. So even though I read them six years earlier than you did, I read them out of order. And saw a movie first. So really I'm no better.

  7. I have read the first HarryPotter book just this year. No more than that. Why? The first one didn't pull me in. At. All.
Everytime I see a preview for the new movie I feel like I should read the rest. There's so many other great books that get read first.

  8. I think the 4th or 5th book was out before I finally started reading them. I now re-read the series once a year, at least.

  9. I started reading them the week of my wedding in 2004...I was late to class (college) that week and I almost missed dropping off the rehearsal dinner decorations because I was reading and couldn't stop!

  10. I didn't read them until last year. Mostly for the same reasons as yours, although I did see movies 1-5 before reading the books. When the sixth movie was about to come out I knew I had to find time to read them. I wish I had jumped on the bandwagon a long time ago! The experience of reading the final two books was amazing, I wish I could relive it.
