Critique Me, Baby

I had a really productive meeting with one of my CPs, Julie, on Monday night. (I call her my IRL CP.)

She sat down with me and went page by page through my ms, telling me all of my problems.

I know something like that might freak some people out, but I LOVED IT. I love knowing what isn't working and why. I love hearing, "Were you going to do something about this totally obvious plot device?" when I thought it was somewhat sly. I love the discussion that comes along with critique because it helps me come up with better ideas!

I took a ton of notes to go along with her comments, so I have a lot to work with here. YAY.

I was in desperate need of some inspiration right about now.

  1. Critiques are awesome and it's wonderful how you respond to them. I remember when I was first starting out they were so daunting and I was completely terrified of them. Now they're welcomed and I've seen my work improve a lot. Congrats on the great IRL CP! Good luck with the revisions! :D

  2. YAY! I love being edited. Seriously. I get to a point where I just can't see the work objectively anymore and someone needs to intervene with a reality check :)

  5. Good CP's are worth their weight in gold. They come from teh pov of an unbiased reader and you can't ask for more than that.

  6. Hooray for CPs! I love getting critiqued too--it's so nice to get a view of your own work from someone else's eyes.

  7. I love critiques, too. Once I finish a draft I have a hard time seeing mistakes--especially things that only make sense to me. I love hearing what my CP's are thinking as they're reading.

  9. I have got to find a group of local writing buddies - this sounds amazingly helpful.
