Friday Five (10)

1. Yesterday was my first day back at school.

I had a few small snafus. My classroom was nowhere near ready and I spent all morning running around all sweaty doing last minute prep. Last minute prep included, but was not limited to, magic eraser-ing a lovely drawing of the male genitalia and a choice phrase or two off the side of one of my desks. I spent a lot of time on my hair, but it came out terrible in my school picture, and my ill-thought-out first day outfit looked less profesh and more like I walk-of-shamed into my classroom. Then, of course, within 5 minutes of 1st period starting I managed to work "G-Spot" into a conversation, and when I looked down to grab that pesky string that was hanging out of my jacket sleeve I realized it wasn't actually a string but rather the strap to my bra. Hanging out the sleeve of my jacket.

Yeah.

So, I made it. I'm exhausted as hell, and apparently they expect me to go back today. And for several months in a row. Yeesh. I don't know if I can handle this. I need a nap.

2. I spent my night recovering by sharing a bottle of wine with my friend Claire and watching Bad Teacher. It was actually a perfect First Day of School recovery activity. And there was the bonus of this:

nom nom nom nom nom

3. Yeah, thanks to The Campaign I have some new followers. New followers, you need to know this about me and this alone. I LOVE JASON SEGEL. Like, bad. Like, really bad. Like, embarrassingly bad. I mean, this exists on my computer:

Yeah, I'm that person. And I'm not ashamed.

Well, maybe just a little bit.

But, really? Jason Segel is pretty much as sexy as it gets in my world. And if you don't agree...well, maybe we should hang out so I don't have to fight you for him.

4. Oh! Did you hear the news? My writing bestie Heather Trese has started blogging again! If you get a chance, stop by her blog and say hello. Heather's blog is awesome and Heather is awesome and your life will really be a better place if she is in it. Trust me.

Also my good buddy Melissa Landers has started up a group blog with some of her friends called Honestly YA, so check that out if you are looking for a new blog to add to your reader!

5. I have a ton of family obligations this weekend which, sadly, means no real time to write. I am so pumped to outline the changes I need to make to make my WIP AWESOME and time is just slipping away from me. I love my family, but I wish they would understand that I really need to harness this positive energy right now so I can run with it. Oh well...I'll do what I can.

I hope you all have a fantastic weekend!

  1. Dude, Jason should so make a movie with you about YOUR classroom experiences. :) It would be way better than Bad Teacher.

  6. So my library's internet filter blocked your blog today and flagged it as "porn"...haha. I blame that first paragraph. Too funny! Luckily since I work here I'm allowed to take the filter off. hehe

  8. I started back yesterday too, but I don't think I can top your morning. I did work a football game last night (YAY!), and then had a half day today due to Irene. And while the past two days were completely draining, I was so glad to get back and see my kids.

Oh, and I don't think we can be friends anymore. Jason Segal is MINE. :)

  15. I start student teaching in January. I hope my first day isn't as exciting as yours was ;)

Jason Segel is a cutie. But I promise to keep my hands off, mostly because I'll be too busy with Henry Cavi

  16. AH I DON'T KNOW WHAT THAT WAS. Anyway. What I was in the middle of saying before I accidentally hit Enter because I apparently FAIL at working a keyboard is, I'll be too with Henry Cavill. Who is the #1 reason I'm so obsessed with The Tudors.

  17. Hi Jessica, What an entertaining post! I love your upbeat voice and sense of humor. I'm a fellow Campaigner and also a fellow So Cal resident. BUT: I have no idea who Jason Segel is. (I'm guessing, though, that he's young enough to be the father of my grandchild ...if I had one.)

  19. Campaigner and fellow teacher stopping by to say hi. Down under we are just coming to the end of the school term. But then again it is also the middle of winter, so everything is done arse backwards down here.

My best first day activity is to take my students down to the local park where a big plinth sans statue lies in the middle of a rose garden. They all have to sketch the massive base (to test their basic drawing skills) and then add a sketch of the statue they will put on it when they are famous artists. Fun activity, but I think the word is out and now each year my new batch of Art students roll their eyes when I tell them we are going on a surprise walk to the park. Goddamn dead poets moment right there. bam. Brings a tear to my eye just thinking about it.

  20. Jessica,

Nice way to start the school year. I occasionally teach Chemistry at night at a local college, but I've never had a day like that. I'm not sure I could teach high school though. Sounds too intimidating. Anyway, I'm glad you joined the campaign and thanks for stopping by my blog.

  21. Hehe. :) What a 1st day back you had. Dude, hair always goes wonky in front of a camera. It's, like, the law.
Also, Jason is funny and dorky-cute-ish, but srsly? He's like a man-child and ...not sexy. *ducks* (Please don't hate me.)

May this week bring you many good hair days and bra straps that stay put.

    Huggles,
    Lola

  22. I wore a new blouse to school the first week and at one point I looked down and it was unbuttoned all the way to my bra. Not gonna wear that bad boy again! I love Jason Segel too. He rocks HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER.
