Friday Five (21)

1. I somehow got put on the mailing list for's email newsletters. I get so annoyed when I see insipid things like Does Lady Gaga Want Kids? and Breaking News in the Bieber Paternity Case! show up in my inbox. But I check that email at work, and is blocked there. So every time I try to unsubscribe I just get sent to a blocked page. Then the next day I see another stupid headline in my inbox and I get all stabby again.

I don't give a crap about celebrities on a good day, but at 7:15 before I've finished my keg of coffee, the last thing I want to think about is what show I can catch The Situation on now.

2. In case there was any doubt about me being Teacher of the Year, I spent a good 10 minutes of class telling my 1st period class how sexy Warner (the villain) from Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi is. Yes, I actually used the word sexy multiple times. I could have easily let the conversation go on for another 10 minutes, but I imagined my principal walking in, so I made myself shift gears back to To Kill A Mockingbird. I may have had a segue that was something like, "Speaking of sexy, let's go back to Atticus Finch."
I'm fairly certain that my students think I'm insane.

3. I didn't go to Breaking Dawn at midnight, and I really have no plans to see the movie. I'm waiting for all the recaps today to see if it is worth my mocking, but I really think I may just skip it altogether. I still have bruises from how far that book let me down, and I don't know if those wounds will ever really heal. I'm damaged, I tell you. DAMAGED.

Did you see it? How was it?

I just keep thinking about all of the people who have been into the movies and hadn't read the books. BOY HOWDY are those people in for a surprise with this one. Poor suckers.

4. After today I have a full, glorious week off for Thanksgiving. I'm hoping to use it to catch up on NaNoWriMo, but, let's be real here. I'll be sleeping in, cuddling with the pooch, and generally being a layabout. But that's exactly how I like to spend my time off, so it will really be perfect.

5. What's that you asked for? Another reminder to vote for my friend Claire and another photo of the two of us? Well, here you go!

Look how cute we are!

If you've missed it, my fabulous friend Claire is one of five finalists in American Way magazines Road Warrior contest. (American Way is the in-flight magazine for American Airlines, FYI.) Claire is the ONLY female and is clearly the most awesome she needs your votes! If you have a minute, could you please click this link and vote for her? You do have to fill out some info, but you will be entered to win 100,000 American miles, which is a pretty killer prize.

That's it for this week, peeps. Have a glorious weekend. <3

  1. I figure I will watch BD1 when it comes out at Red Box...I'm too cheap to waste money on it at the theater.

  2. Yeah, I also disappointed by the last book in the Twilight series, so I made a vow years ago that I wouldn't see the movie in theaters--despite the fact that my cousin's trying to drag me because she hearts R Patz.

  3. I often want to break out with discussions of YA with my students, but I teach college Spanish, so it's a bit off topic. Though yesterday they started reminiscing about the 90s -- overalls and Space Jam (!!) -- and I was so entertained that I couldn't bring myself to tell them to get back to their assignment. (One of my students interns in publishing, though, so I gave her some ARCs I no longer needed.) If my high school teacher had talked about YA, I imagine I would have been happy as a clam. No doubt they love you!

  4. I got on that MTV list too. And Nickelodeon. I figure they must have done some YA related thing and got our email addresses. Annoying.

  5. That Atticus Finch/sexy link made me laugh!

  6. I actually did fall a wee bit in love with Atticus Finch. (And that was before I saw the movie.) Smart people who want to be noble are so sexy. I know, I know. I'm weird.

  7. we share a brain? I swear I'm thinking the same thing about Breaking Dawn. Although, for me it's more of a movie let down, although I was not crazy about the last couple hundred pages of the last book either. But curiosity will probably win out with me.

It's funny you say that about Warner because I was totally repulsed by him from the start. Or maybe I was just too blinded by Adam to be enamored with anyone else (well, except Kenji - they kind of reminded me of Michael and Kaleb from Hourglass. Well, a little)

And I'm in the running for teacher of the year too. Yep. Some of those same kind of conversations. hahahahaha

    Have a good weekend!

  8. I'm not going to see Breaking Dawn. I never even read the book. I'll get around to it eventually, but I'm in no hurry.

What a cute picture of you and Claire! When do they announce the winner?

Monday night, my favorite bookstore (the one with all the book signings) is having a panel with 10 YA authors, including Stephanie Perkins, Jay Asher and a bunch of others. I'm so disappointed I can't go! I have my writing class on Monday nights so I can't miss it. Bummer.

  9. You're very pretty!

If you think Lady Gaga and Justin Bieber emails are bad, just imaging what it's like to get an email saying "Do you suffer from erectile dysfunction?"

    I tend to think "I'm a girl".

I hated Breaking Dawn. I might be watching the movie if my cousin pays for the ticket though.

  10. I went and saw Breaking Dawn with some friends for the express purpose of getting a good laugh in. That mission was accomplished handily :)

Love the Atticus Finch segue--he totally is in my book!

  11. As for surprises I felt that way about people who had not read The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and then toodled off to the movie. EEEEYOW, they're in for a shocker.

  12. That is a great picture of you guys. LOL at "Speaking of sexy let's talk about Atticus Finch"

  13. I hope you have so much fun on your week off... you deserve it, lady!

Okay, regarding BREAKING DAWN: I hated that book with a fiery passion, BUT... I have to say, the movie was comparatively well done. If you let the complete and total insanity of the plot go, the acting and pacing have improved. That's my two cents. Let me know what you think if you end up checking it out. :)
