Lucky 7s

I was tagged by the lovely Sara McClung in this Lucky 7s meme that is floating around.

Here's how it works.

  1. Go to page 7 or 77 in your current manuscript
  2. Go to line 7
  3. Copy down the next 7 lines/sentences as they are – no cheating
  4. Tag 7 other authors
Well, I'm still in SUPER rough drafting mode. I don't really have pages, actually, just mumbo jumbo folders and stuff on Scrivener. It's all out of order, some of it is flashbacks that might not have anything to do with anything. And, yeah, I know, excuse, excuse, excuse. BUT I'm not one to turn down a dare. (I know this isn't actually a dare, but...well, it sorta is.) So I went to my 7th page on Scrivener and went down to line 7 and found probably the most boring part of the entire thing so far. WOO. And now I shall share it with you.

(This is super rough, you guys. Like, I'm in pre-first draft mode. Brain dump mode. Gah.)

“Ghost? What's wrong?”

“Hold on a second, okay? Talk to me for a minute. Tell me what you’re doing while I walk across the street.” Across the street was a park with a playground. If I could just get over there, I could sit down on the swingset and catch my breath. If I could just get to those swings I could get myself together.

“Uh, I went out to dinner with my brother and his new girlfriend,” he said. “She had a friend in town, so we went to some ridiculous restaurant at one of the casinos. So overpriced, but she loved it.” His voice was hesitant. Gentle. He had no idea if I was being attacked or set on fire or what.

Aaaand, there you go. Ugh.

I'm not going to tag anyone because I'm a contrarian like that...and I'm too lazy to dig around and see who hasn't done it yet. But if you haven't shared yet, feel free to play along! I shared my super rough words (and oh man does it feel weird), you can too!

Happy Monday!

    1. Thank you for commenting, Katy. No one else has and I am getting a complex. :-\

I know I should have just cheated and posted a more interesting part! Gah...I'm too insecure for this. Haha.

I saw you'll be posting yours on Friday. Can't wait!

  2. Jess, I love how you (just like any other writer) is SO hard on yourself. But really, in those 7 lines you shared, you've already shared some character context and intrigue. I'd keep reading so I could see what was wrong with Ghost!

Thanks for sharing. I know how hard it is. I hated my 7 lines with a fiery passion.

    1. Haha! Yeah, we are all so hard on ourselves, aren't we? I guess it comes with the territory. :-)

  3. NICE Jess! I would definitely keep reading... I really want to know what it is he's about to share! And I also want to know what that last line is all about.

Also? I think it's funny that both our characters think about catching their breath ;)

    1. Tee hee. It's such a random part of the story. But it's a good one.

      Thanks for tagging me!

  5. That last line really got me! I like your dialogue and pacing, too.

Kudos to you! I have never shared any snippets of my drafts.

  8. I love it, no tagging! Such a rebel.

Great lines from your wip! You're working on something new then? A ghost story? How awesome! Good luck with it! I hope it all goes smoothly.

    1. Yeah, it's new. But it's not *exactly* a ghost story. Heh.

  9. Nice lines. How come everyone has such good 7's lines? Seriously, mine are so lame. They're all just business stuff. Like getting the dude from the couch to the kitchen. I think I'm going to write a book that has awesomeness on all derivative 7 pages:)

  10. I love this part: His voice was hesitant. Gentle. He had no idea if I was being attacked or set on fire or what. Also, I really want to know if Ghost is a nickname or literally a ghost. :)
