I'm Free! (Sorta.)

It's a glorious day today...you know why? Because it's Monday morning and I'm NOT spending it in a classroom full of children! That's right, it's summer break, and this teacher is OFF!

This isn't my photo, but it is my beach. Too bad I'll hardly have a chance to see it this summer.

This school year was a HUGE challenge. As you know, I lost the job I loved at the end of last year, so I was teaching middle school this year. I learned a ton about myself and my teaching this year in a classroom of 8th graders. One thing I learned is that I'm good at pumping students up, but I'm not so good at calming them down. 8th graders don't need to be pumped up, so I was really at a loss on how to deal with them a lot of times. They just require a lot of skills to manage that I just don't have. At all. So, yeah, this year was a struggle. Perhaps I'll do a recap post some time this week...now that I actually have a little more time to blog.

As is my way, I have a completely insane schedule this summer. I'm heading off to Europe soon - a week in London and Dublin with my husband for vacation, then two weeks in Dublin and Galway for my second MFA residency. I've never been to Ireland before, so I'm really looking forward to spending so much time there!

When I get back from Europe, I have my annual girls' trip to Vegas with my lady friends. Then, of course, there's the SCBWI LA annual conference. Plus a weekend in Chicago for my wbff Erin's 30th birthday. Oh, and my anniversary is in there at some point, too. I'm sure we'll do something fun...we always do.

And let's not forget that I have a book to finish writing...like, yesterday.

So, yeah, while I would love to spend my summer reading and relaxing by the pool, well, that's just not how I operate. Free time is for the birds, right?

Have a fabulous summer, lovlies!

  2. I am always in awe of you, because you're always awesome and amazing. But for tackling this year as you did, I'm completely ready to just dangle you by your ankles and dip you in gold. You're a goddess. <3

  4. I'm exhausted just reading your summer schedule - yay for being done though! This year was one of the best yet saddest I've had in a while - for various reasons. I may have to do a recap too. As for your year - I know that had to have been SO HARD switching from a school you love AND teaching middle school! You are a tough, brave woman! Now, go enjoy!

  8. It sounds like you have a very busy summer planned, but it's all AMAZING things!! I would be thrilled to do even just ONE of those things. Hope you have a wonderful time. My summer is all a bunch of...well, nothing much at all. I guess working year-round means summer really isn't that special. It's just another day to me. I do have a few concerts planned, which I thought you'd like since I know you love music.

Wish I could see you while you're here in Chicago. We'll be so close! But I know you'll be hanging out with your friends. Do you know yet what you'll be doing? I have some friends coming for a weekend next month and I'm not really sure what they want to do. I've thrown out the usual suggestions, but I'm open to new ideas!

  10. That is a very busy summer! I'd love to get back to England this fall to see my best friend, the flight costs are so much more now than when I went a couple years ago.
